Our Moon Festival Day: Rabits, Dango and the Magic Moon
On Monday morning, we had our Moon Festival at preschool. It all started when seven little rabbits appeared. They looked so cute, and if you looked closely... they had the faces of the children! Everyone was surprised and happy to see them. The festival had officially begun!
First, we talked about Tsukimi, the Japanese tradition of watching the full moon in autumn. The children listened quietly and looked interested. Then we played a guessing game about seasonal foods. Some were easy, some were tricky, but everyone enjoyed thinking about all the tasty things that come with this time of year.
After that, it was time for dango-making. The baby class helped by pouring rice flour into a big bowl. They looked curious, wondering what would happen next. The older children added water and started mixing everything together with their hands.
Once the dough was ready, they rolled it into small balls. Each child took their time, trying to make nice round shapes. The kitchen staff boiled the dango, and the children gathered to watch. When the balls floated up, everyone leaned in a little closer. After cooling them in water, the children helped stack them into a dango tower.
They counted as they placed each one, thinking carefully about how to make it look nice.
Later, the baby class returned from their walk. They were amazed to see that the flour they had poured earlier had turned into real dango.
We also explored real susuki grass, a special plant used in moon viewing. The children were very curious and gently touched the fluffy tops. Some said it looked like a tail, or soft feathers.
During the day, the sky stayed cloudy. But we heard that at night, the moon came out from behind the clouds for a little while. Maybe some children were able to see it from home.
We made something together, learned something new, and shared the feeling of autumn. A beautiful memory for all of us.
We are thankful for the food we eat, the stories we share, and the moon that shines on us all.
